Parking fine in the small print!

My wife and I recently attended an evening charity concert at the Salvation Army Citadel. We parked our car on the nearby Aldi Car Park, in the naive belief that the well-signed parking restrictions were there to ensure that spaces were available for shoppers, and that as the store was closed, the parking restrictions would not apply.
We have now received a Parking Charge Notice for £70. I checked the parking signs, to find that the ‘small print’ at the base of each sign indicates that parking controls operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Accordingly we have paid the charge, reduced to £40 for early payment.
However, it seems that the only purpose served by operating a penalty system outside of normal shopping hours is to boost the company’s profits at the expense of unwary motorists.
If, on the other hand, I am mistaken about this, the company may wish to demonstrate its public spiritedness by donating my ‘fine’ to the Salvation Army. I shall await their response with interest.
In the meantime, motorists and would-be parkers take note!
