WITH Scarborough's traffic congestion now at breaking point, I am sure the inventor of the traffic lights, Police Officer William L. Potts of Detroit, must be turning in his grave at the overuse of his marvellous invention in our home town.
The first traffic light was in installed in 1920 on the corner of Woodward and Michigan Avenues in Detroit, where they eased traffic flow considerably.

In 2008 Scarborough Council installed a ludicrous set of traffic lights at the end of Valley Bridge, which tested drivers’ patience considerably.

If he were still with us, Mr Potts would surely also agree that SBC’s current installation of a new set of lights at Throxenby Lane-Scalby Road-Green Lane is a ridiculous overuse of his beloved invention.

As new sets of lights sprout and spread like wildfire, Mr Potts can at least take some solace that his invention isn’t going to total waste in Scarborough. Apparently plans are afoot for our town’s millions of traffic lights to be used as disco lights for all-night street parties, all over the town, this New Year’s Eve.
