ONLOOKERS were shocked as a car careered out of control early on Tuesday evening in Columbus Ravine.
A car, being driven at speed, crashed into traffic bollards and then into two other vehicles before police arrived at the scene.

Officers have since arrested a 43-year-old local man in connection with the incident.

Eyewitness Vicki Harrison, wh
o was visiting Scarborough on a break from her Leeds home, said: “The driver of this car was veering all over the road and driving as if he was being chased.

“He just lost control of the car and then it hit the bollards and careered all over the place.

“He’d been going like a bat out of hell – there were even sparks coming off his wheels.

“We were terrified – he was so out of control he could have easily hit us.”

No-one was hurt in the incident, which was also witnessed by Dean Rodgers, of North Sea Fisheries. “He was going at a heck of a speed – there were sparks everywhere. It was like watching Police, Camera, Action.

“There were kids in one of the cars he clipped – it was very scary. Luckily they weren’t injured but they easily could have been. He did try to do a runner but the police soon caught hold of him.”

Scarborough police confirmed that a man had been arrested following the incident. He has been charged with reckless driving, driving without insurance and a licence offence and bailed to appear in court on August 20.
