A callous thief snatched a 76-year-old woman's purse while she was in a Scarborough charity shop and, within minutes, had stolen a "substantial" amount from the victim's bank account.
A Scarborough Police spokesman said the purse, which was in a bag, contained the woman’s credit cards and the suspect had quickly gone to a cash machine and taken a substantial amount of money in two separate transactions.

He said: “This is a despicable crime particularly around Christmas time.

“We would ask all Scarborough residents, in particular the elderly, to guard their bags and be aware of purse dipping.”

The spokesman added that a number of purse thefts had already been reported as town centres start to become busy in the run-up to Christmas with thieves targetting charity shops as shoppers easily become distracted whilst looking for a bargain.

Anyone with information about the incident, which took place at around 112.15pm on Saturday, is asked to contact Scarborough Police on 0845 6060247.
