The credit crunch has hit household budgets hard.
The price of food has risen dramatically, especially basic items like bread and pasta. Now a loaf of bread can cost up to £1.30, and 500g of pasta as much as £1.90.
This week I meet Rob Clarke, a chef and catering tutor at Yorkshire Coast College.
He has agreed to show us how easy it is to make your very own homemade bread – and it will cost you a snip of the price at the supermarket, at just under 10p a loaf!
INGREDIENTS

White bread
1 kilo of strong white flour
100g soft butter
600ml warm milk
60g fresh yeast

Brown bread
500g strong white flour
500g granary flour
100g soft butter
60g fresh yeast



METHOD

Rob said: "Rub the butter into the flour and salt.

"Put your yeast in warm milk, mix together and leave for a minute for the yeast to activate.

"Add to the flour mix and knead for about five to six minutes.

"Then leave to prove for around an hour and a half to two hours. Cover with a tea towel.

"Once the dough has proved (it will have doubled in size during this time) knock the dough back. "Knocking back" means knocking the air out of it.

"Do this by kneading the dough again as hard as you can.

"Then leave to prove for another half an hour. Then put in the oven at 200C.

"The bread should take around half an hour to bake, and it will rise and be golden brown.

"Take the bread off the tray. Tap the bread underneath, if it sounds hollow, your bread is fully cooked."

It seems more people are jumping on the bread baking bandwagon as stores are seeing stocks of bread makers flying off the shelves.

Argos has seen a 90 per cent growth in recent weeks, compared to last year, and hand blender sales have shot up by over 50 per cent.

The bake-your-own trend follows recent reports of the return to traditional 'kitchen gardening' and the grow-your-own mentality that has seen thrifty consumers opting for the vegetable patch in place of the supermarket shelf. As well as offering financial benefits, growing and baking your own is seen as a more environmentally friendly and healthy alternative, providing consumers with greater control over what they eat.
